CUPCAKE NEWS: World's Largest Disappointment

As much as I LOVE Duff Goldman. As much as I LOVE CUPCAKES. I was devasted that I could not make the trek to Mall of America to see the unveiling of the Worlds Largest Cupcake. I decided NOT to make the drive (5 1/2 hours each way) when I learned on the internet that autographs with Duff were on a wrist band basis...cue at 10 am. No leaving the lines and no photos with Duff. Plus, on a side note...it is NOT A SECRET that Duff actually hates cupcakes.

Imagine my surprise when I googled the results to see that THIS is the cupcake. Really? Only 18 inches in diameter and a foot tall? That not a LARGE cupcake, its an AVERAGE CAKE. Plus, the frosting isn't even cute and special. Boy, would I have been sooooo p.o'ed if I had driven all that time and distance and spent all that gas money to see THAT and NOT get to take a pic with Duff. ANYWAY...below is the article from Fox9 in the Twin Cities. I think it is a dead give away at how secluded he and the cupcake were based on how little documentations was available on the net.

World's Largest Cupcake Makes Debut at Mall of America It weighs in at almost 62 pounds

BLOOMINGTON – Bakers at the Mall of America were successful in making the world’s largest cupcake Sunday.

The World’s Largest Bake Sale was put on by the non-profit group Share Our Strength. The organization wants to encourage people from across America to end childhood hunger by raising money through bake sales.

Food Network’s “Ace of Cakes” Duff Goldman and his crew undertook the challenge of making the world’s largest cupcake.

“Just the frosting alone took 16 pounds of butter, 10 pounds of sugar, and 3 oz. of food coloring,” Goldman said.

The cupcake weighs in at a whopping 61.4 pounds, and is 18 inches wide and 12 inches high.

The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that this was the biggest cupcake ever made.

The rest of the baked goods on sale at the Mall of America were made by local students attending the international culinary school in the Twin Cities.

UPDATED INFORMATION 4/1/08: I knew I loved Duff, even if the cupcake was kind of lame. From the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Watch their video here.

Goldman had been at the megamall very early overseeing arrangements for the 61-pound-plus cupcake made at his Baltimore business Charm City Cake, and shipped here for a Guinness World Records adjudication of its status as the world's largest cupcake.

Goldman was scheduled to hold an autograph signing at 2 p.m. About 11:30 a.m., as he waited in the management offices of the MOA, Duff decided he wasn't doing anything and because there was already a line, he might as well go upstairs and sign some autographs.

Before a table had been moved into place, Goldman was putting promo photos of himself on his knee to autograph them.

Soft-spoken and direct -- "I'll take a picture for you but not with you" -- he was all about moving that line. He deserves an award for being early: "Most Considerate Celebrity Autographer" award!

You're the winner, Duff. Go bake yourself something.

Why are you disappointed that the cupacake wasn't "big"? Of course it's big. Think about the size of a REAL cupcake! This is a cupcake NOT a Cake!! The size of Duff's record setting cupcake is 150 times the size of a regular cupcake. And the event was for a good cause for heaven's sake. All the money raised at the event stays in Minnesota to help hungry children. Take a look at the bigger picture lady.

I merely say "disappointed" as when you read of the worlds largest ball of string, pancake, musky, etc, they are MASSIVE. I did not say anything about money raised and who benefited. The last time I checked it was a free country and I am entitled to voice my opinion - as are you. If you don't like it, don't read it, don't watch it, don't buy it. Pretty simple.

I'm with you, Cupcake queen. I could have used something slightly more massive. In some other press pictures it looked bigger. Shame on him. Yes, it's bigger than my head, but I could stand for bigger. ;-)

Well did you know Duff had to create a special pan just to bake the cupcake in ONE piece? This means he didn't bake seperate pieces to make it "massive." He made a TRUE cupcake. As I recall, cupcakes are baked as one piece. People's expectations are too high these days. He established a new record. So if anyone can find a way to make a bigger cupcake and bake it in an oven in one piece, go for it. But as it stands, Duff hold the title.
