No Satisfaction

Did you hear? I hadn't! Yesterday afternoon, my friend John broke it to me that a new restaurant in Milwaukee - Fratellos - has a cupcake menu! WHAT!? CUPCAKES?! MILWAUKEE!? Wooo Hooo! This is HUGE news!

Conveniently, I had plans with one of my pals, Sarah, to do up the town...just down the block from this new hotspot on the Milwaukee River; of course I made her go check it out. We hit their bar for a late-night snacky.























We were greeted with their cupcake menu. Five variations plus a Featured Flavor, $1.99 each. The five were really just variations of chocolate and vanilla with assorted garnish. This is kind of a disappointment. With that said, we decided to try the featured flavor. . . of which the bartender did not even know what it was. Nice. What arrived was terribly disappointing.

















Sloppy presentation of a pound-cake type cupcake with a disaster of a strawberry "topping" and a granola garnish. Too bad for them, Sarah and I know how to make cupcakes really well. The cake was fine for a pound cake...but that is not what a cupcake texture should be. The topping was not a specialty strawberry sauce, it was a poorly created strawberry frosting that was separating due to a bad mix of warm and cold ingredients and then sitting too long. We recognized the snafu immediately. As far as the granola topping goes...well, Sarah was very passionate about it and summed it up really well in the opening photo of this post.

A message to Fratello's:
I know you have only been open for 5 days. The Milwaukee Cupcake Queen will be back (use Terminator voice). I am sure you are still working the kinks out. Thanks for bringing cupcakes to Milwaukee...I hope you can make your cupcake menu something to be excited about - as it should be!
