Prior to my trip, I mapped out what I thought would be my cupcake itinerary. The reality is that flights get delayed, Ground Zero is a very powerful place, and frankly; 10 cupcake shops in 30 hours is a very ambitious goal. While I was researching, it was the website for Babycakes that I loved the most. I expected a shiney, new, funky little spot. What I found was anything but shiney and new, but incredibly cool and funky in a vintage way, none the less.
In the location of an old bakery, this place had the most fantastic mosaic tile cupcake front stoop. There was a guy popping in from the apartment next door...he needed a little sweet treat to end his day. He recommended the treats below...that is what he grabbed to take upstairs.
The "cupcake tops", a la Seinfeld's muffin tops, were a bargain treat that I could see becoming an addicting little goodie if you happen to be lucky enough live on top of a bakery in Manhattan!
Babycakes specializes in gluten- and casein-free goodies for those New Yorkers with sensitive tummies. That cracked me up! With that in mind, I was not completely sold that my cupcake would be awesome. Just as I was wrong during my own local gluten-free and vegan challenge, as before, I was wrong here again.
I ordered a vanilla cupcake with a caramelized banana topping that was simply to die for. They packed it in a little chinese food to-go bucket so that I could take it back to my hotel with me and snacked on it later in the evening. I am absolutely willing to say that this was my favorite cupcake of the trip. The buttery banana buttercream was subline. Bravo Babycakes!

I'm so glad you liked Babycakes. I loved it. It was by far one of my favorite cupcakeries while living in NYC. I really liked their carrot and LOVED the cupcake tops!
