R.I.P. Gourmet Magazine

As the art director for a direct competitor of Gourmet magazine, it is bittersweet to see this title fold. On the one hand, it is potential for readership for Taste of Home. Win. On the other, its a sign of the very real and scary times surrounding all magazines...not just food. Lose.

After 68 years, Gourmet magazine is closing its print kitchen, and that is very sad.

Well thats sad at least they will continue to run the online stuff with Epicurious.

Speaking of curious... what happens to all the people that have subscriptions when a magazine just stops... do they all loose their money? Interesting...

Typically, when a magazine folds, the publisher will finish out a subscription from a sister title. My guess, in this case, Gourmet readers will begin receiving Bon Ap.

I am sad to see this magazine go the way of so many others lately, but I think people for the most part prefer something like Taste of Home--something for the real world they live in. Loved those scary cupcakes!

I for one am really going to miss this magazine. There is a place for both BA and Gourmet in my house - the recipe-driven and the story driven. The recipes in Gourmet were not always sensible for a regular housewife like me, but the stories - the undiscovered foods, the new places, the great stories that accompany each article. It's a sad, sad day for me. Though I will follow Ruth Reichl to the end of the earth.
