For the past several years, I have blogged nearly every single day about the sweet dreams of cupcakes. That is all well and good, but do I have what it takes to really work in a cupcakery? This weekend I got to stick my toe in the water. I was sooo fortunate to be allowed to work the GRAND OPENING of the newest location of
Bleeding Heart Bakery of Chicago. Michelle and Vinny Garcia own the awesome fully sustainable punk-rock bakery and have now branched out to a small storefront in the Oak Park neighborhood.

Michelle and I met a couple of months ago at our impromptu Cupcake Summit in Chicago and I instantly loved her. There is such a genuine quality about her, in spite of her success as a competitor on various
Food Network Cake Challenges.

Also on hand was another cupcake sister...Sheela from
Cake Eaters Bakery in Minneapolis. Unlike me, who came and worked for the day. Sheela, being a professional baker, flew in from MN and worked for 3 days straight...baking overnight and working the counter with me during the day. Thankfully, we had the experience of Aaron, the Oak Park manager and their newest employee, Claire...who kicked ass as if she had worked there forever. Oh, it can not be forgotten, that we also got a visit from Natalie, Teno and Tony of
Bake & Destroy fame.

Check out this little cutie who was so excited to finally get a change to visit Bleeding Heart...why, because she fancies herself a punk rock girl. Her mom says she will only wear pink and black and LOVES little skulls with bows. Heck, who could blame her!

I fell in love with the bakery life. People are SO HAPPY when they walk in, stare at all the treats, trying to decide what to indulge in. Even if you start your day on a bump, 5 minutes in a bakery is sure to change your mind. By the end of the day, I was exhausted, hungry, dreaming of a bottle of advil and still had a 2 hour drive home; and you know what? It was fantastic.

Michelle...thank you for the opportunity. I will not forget it anytime soon! xoxox
