Edible Greeting Cards?

American Greetings Corporation (NYSE: AM) has introduced a memorable new experience in the card aisle with Tasties™. Each card in the new line features a dissolvable flavor-strip, safely sealed inside, which recipients can enjoy along with the warm wishes of friends and family. These tasty surprises correspond with the art and sentiment of each card to offer the perfect recipe for a fun greeting. One birthday card in the new line features an image of a cupcake and reads, "If nothing else, birthdays are a great excuse to eat cake." The inside reads, "…lots and lots of cake." The dissolvable strip included encourages recipients to "take a bite," and enjoy the taste of vanilla cupcake, expanding on the fun and sweetness of the greeting. Other flavors to help consumers celebrate include everything from donut to margarita. You can also follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/amgreetings and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AmericanGreetings.
Mmm...cupcakes strip. I don't know about you, but I would still rather someone just give me an actual CUPCAKE with my greeting card. No?

The Perfect Combination

You know those days...the ones you have when you wake up and have no idea what you are going to do. Truth is, there is nothing you really WANT to do; but you know you don't want to stay home. Or maybe you do. I have been having a few of those days lately. It is a strange feeling, actually.

Yesterday, reluctantly, I drove out to the western 'burbs to check on a friends house while they were traveling. I knew that at least I could stop by Miss Julia's Bake Shop while I was out there, and I had not been since they opened back in April. It was such a nice little visit. Exciting to see that success has found it's way to their adorable little shop. The owners are proud of their business and they should be. The cupcakes truly are near perfection. I have visited cupcake shops all over the country and I would rank theirs with the best of the best.

It was so nice to sit down with one of the owners, Paula, and visit...like we were old friends. While we chatted, we snacked on an absolutely FANTASTIC chocolate cupcake that had the most luscious raspberry frosting — perfect flavor or fruit and cream, not too much sugar. Simply amazing. I know that I have written of their shop before, but I just had to take a moment to say thank you for picking up my mood and my day and I will continue to wish you great success!

ICM:Eat Local!

conway-20100621-1370
Due to some technical difficulties with the blog this week, I apologize for the delay in this post. This past Monday was our first IronCupcake:Milwaukee event at the Discovery World. Surrounded by the cityscape and the views of Lake Michigan, the location was a massive hit!

conway-20100621-1283
How many times have you wanted to go out for dinner and had the "there's no where to go" conversation. Well, think again! The June IronCupcake:Milwaukee challenge was Eat Local – cupcakes based on your favorite Milwaukee restaurant. An excellent event with our partners, Milwaukee Food Tours, from their site:
Milwaukee Food Tours offers several exciting tours exploring neighborhoods originally settled by Italian, Irish, Polish and German immigrants. On all of our Milwaukee tours, our guides will point out architectural highlights, cultural hotspots, and great restaurants and shops while sampling flavors from restaurants along the way. We’ll talk about our city’s favorite fictional friends, Laverne & Shirley, and we’ll even visit Fonzie on our RiverWalk/Old World Third Street tour!
We were also very lucky to be joined by the team that brings us Slow Food of Wisconsin South-East. We thought it was a though provoking pairing with our mainstream restaurant challenge. SlowFoodWISE is the recipient of this month's non-profit donation. Their mission:
Seeking to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system. We reconnect Americans with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. We work to inspire a transformation in food policy, production practices and market forces to ensure equity, sustainability and pleasure in the food we eat.
conway-20100621-1276
Had enough? I hope not! We were also joined again by Elizabeth Kay and the team from 99.1 WMYX, as well as Kyle Cherek of Wisconsin Foodie - this month's celebrity judge.

conway-20100621-1209
Partner's Pick — Best Taste: Mark & John's Cubanitas Cupcake. Chocolate and avocado cupcake topped with avocado frosting and fresh fried plantains.

conway-20100621-1178
Partner's Pick — Best Presentation: Natasha & Lauren's Kopp's Cupcake. A cheeseburger with the works; brown sugar cake with a brownie burger pattie in the middle, decorated with sweets to look just like a loaded burger! And as if that was not enough, these lovely ladies also took home the Overall Best Display prize! (Come on girls, we know that cute baby dressed like a Kopp's employee had NOTHING to do with it.)

Celebrity Pick — Kristin's Lopez Bakery Cupcake. A caramel churro cupcake; cinnamon butter cake with caramel filling. (entry #23)

conway-20100621-1161
The Queen's Choice — The Pink Squirrel Cupcake from the gang at Bryant's Cocktail Lounge. Their creation was flavored like The Pink Squirrel, a famous ice cream cocktail invented at Bryant's in the 1940's! (entry #15)

conway-20100621-1155
Overall Best Taste — Carly's Sticky Monkey Cupcake. Inspired by Bartolotta's Lake Park Bistro banana bread pudding. Fresh banana cake with real homemade caramel frosting. (entry #13)

Other local eateries that were paid tribute to included: The Red Dot, Mader's, Le Reve, Buca de Beppo, Oakland Gyros, Comet Café, Wisconsin State Fair, Nite Owl Drive-In, and a salute to the delicious Mexican restaurants along 5th and National.

We also gave away so many fantastic door prizes. Summerfest tickets, July 4th baking kit, and remarkable donations from our awesome supporters: AJBombers, Water Buffalo, Goldi, A Woman's Touch, a drawing (see one of his illustrations at the top of this post) from our little bro, Stu and several awesome packs from City Tins.

conway-20100621-1317
And something amazing happened on Monday night. We had our first SOLD OUT night. Yes, more people than cupcakes. If you were turned away, we are so sorry -- our recommendation is to get your tickets online which guarantees your entry into the event. Do keep in mind that even with online tickets, cupcakes are first come first served so it is always best to be on time for IronCupcake. :-)

Be sure to check out our Eat Local slide show below, with special thanks every month to James Conway Photography.

Big Baby!

I saw Toy Story 3 this weekend. LOVED IT! They introduced some new toy characters...my favorite: Big Baby! Looks a lot like my Mama Baby from 40-some years ago!

More info about Big Baby complements of disnology.com:

Here’s Big Baby’s official manufacturer’s description:

“Your little one will love this lifelike baby doll with his soft, cuddly fabric body and vinyl arms, legs and face. With dazzling blue eyes that open and close, this realistic baby encourages nurturing play. Eighteen inches tall, he comes dressed in an adorable yellow onesie with matching bonnet, and has his own magical bottle of milk that disappears while he drinks! A perfect first doll for your special child. Machine washable on gentle cycle. Flame retardant.”

Fun Facts about Big Baby:

• When asked which character was the most personal contribution of his, Lee Unkrich answered that it was Big Baby. In fact he was wearing a t-shirt with the character’s silhouette when we spoke.
• The drawings all over Big Baby’s body are meant to emulate tattoos on a bouncer or another typically large personality.
• Big Baby plays a bigger role (no pun intended) than you’d think. Can’t talk about it, but it’s pretty deep.
