#MKEFOODIES GROUP TO HOLD
COOKIES FOR KIDS’ CANCER BAKE SALE
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN May 21, 2011 Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is a not-for-profit organization committed to raising funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancers. Through local bake sales, Cookies for Kids’ Cancer provides inspiration and support for individuals, communities, and businesses to help fight pediatric cancer.
#MKEfoodies, a virtual network of bloggers and food enthusiasts in the Milwaukee metro area, will be sponsoring a bake sale and silent auction to raise money for Cookies for Kids’ Cancer on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery, 901 W. Juneau Ave., Milwaukee. The bake sale will feature items made by local food bloggers, bakers, and celebrity chefs, with silent auction baskets featuring items donated by local area businesses.
Gretchen and Larry Witt, founders of Cookies for Kids’ Cancer, were moved to action by their son Liam who was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the age of 2. The first Cookies for Kids’ Cancer bake sale was held in December 2007, when Gretchen decided to have an enormous bake sale to raise money to help fund a pediatric cancer treatment in development. With the help of more than 250 volunteers, the bake sale raised over $400,000.
Tragically, Liam came to the end of his courageous 4-year fight with cancer on January 24, 2011 at the age of 6 ½. To honor Liam Witt’s memory, Cookies for Kids’ with Cancer has put out the call for 700 bake sales to be held around the country during the month of May (the month that would have marked Liam’s 7 th birthday). To add to the effort, The Glad Products Company is matching 100% of funds raised at bake sales throughout the month of May, up to $225,000.
Childhood cancers are the number one disease killer of children - more than asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and pediatric AIDS combined. Nearly 13,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Survivors of childhood cancer face a broad range of physical and psychological challenges imposed by the disease, and some will suffer its long-term effects for the rest of their lives. Despite all these statistics, there has not been a new drug developed specifically for pediatric cancer in 20 years. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer is committed to raising the funds to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer. It is not about one child or one type of pediatric cancer. It is about changing the facts of pediatric cancer for the better, forever.
