Free Money!

Who doesn't love free money?! Well, it's out there to be had if you show your support to Share our Strength. It doesn't cost a penny from your pocket, but the end result is a $20,000 donation from the fine folks at Yahoo. That's a lot FREE MONEY to supply healthy lunches for kids that really need it.

What's Love Got To Do With It?

I am 42 years old, single and never married. But I can tell you that if I were to meet the right guy, of course I would want to legalize and announce that love from the rooftops. But...imagine if you met that right person, and just because they happen to be the same gender as you that it is AGAINST THE FREAKIN' LAW to legalize that relationship? I know I do not keep my opinion on that topic quiet on this blog, or in life for that matter. That is because it just seems ridiculous to me that anyone could have so much free time in their own life that they could even care if two other people want to do the same. So, to that topic, HOORAY NEW YORK. Today was the first day of gay marriage for that state and the sweet couple above were the first in the city to tie the knot. The gentlemen below also got to make if official. Look at these people, they are happy and in love. These are your neighbors, your grandparents, your uncles and aunts. Why on earth should they NOT be allowed to have the same rights as the rest of us. Congratulations to all!

So, what's love got to do with it? Absolutely everything!

Give 'Em Strength

Not all kids are as lucky, or as cute, as my buddies Jack, EJ and Livie. Sure, you've seen the initiatives all over the web, but what exactly IS Share Our Strength? I thought I would pop over to their site and get a little background info...
Share Our Strength® is a national nonprofit that is ending childhood hunger in America.
Share Our Strength’s goal is to end childhood hunger in America. Working with others, we believe we can do this by 2015.
It’s not enough to make sure America’s children have enough to eat; we must make sure they are getting the nutrition they need to live healthy, active lives.
That is why Share Our Strength’s highest priority is to make sure that every child in America gets the nutritious food he or she needs to learn, grow and thrive. We are doing this by improving the access that families all across the country have to healthy, affordable food and by working at the state and city level. This is our No Kid Hungry strategy, and it has four key components that, together, provide children with the nutritious food they need where they live, learn and play:
  • Creating public-private partnerships at the state and city level to map out comprehensive, measurable plans to end child hunger in those areas.
  • Building public awareness about the problem of childhood hunger and solutions to end it.
  • Investing in communities with grants to organizations whose work improves access to nutritious foods or that educate families about such programs.
  • Educating children and families about nutritious, affordable eating.

This summer, Yahoo! has committed to donate $20,000 to Share Our Strength on behalf of the Foodbuzz community of publishers and readers. (That would be, and maybe you, too!)

Pay It Forward

I don't drink alcohol much anymore. I don't smoke. I don't eat ice cream. I don't do drugs. I actually don't really eat cupcake all that often. But, I do have a vice that I refuse to give up...latte's. When I started my new job back in December, I quickly discovered that the Starbucks on my way to work was a drive-thru. PERFECT for those miserable snowy winter days or super humid summer days. Plus it doesn't hurt that there are some adorable guys working that window. Anyway, back to my point... The drive-thru element adds something unexpected to the formula, and it has happened several times and shocks me everytime. The coffee pay-it-forward. Basically, when you least expect it, the car in front of you pays for your coffee! Seriously! What a simple gesture, but at the same time, a great way to start someone's morning off on the right foot! Since I have been the recipient of these treats, I have once paid for the person behind me when the car in front of me did it for me. Other times, I may have just taken the gift, but then surprised someone else later in the week.

It's kind of a crazy feeling, because you will NOT see that person later to be thanked. You have to just want to do it out of the goodness of your heart...but it sticks with you, and I love it. So, going to Starbucks today??? If so, toss the coffee of the person behind you on your card as well.

...Even the White Kids...

THIS is exactly why I love love love Kidd O'Shea! The only thing funnier than he and Elizabeth in this video is the ginormous Brewers bobblehead in the background. Ryan Seacrest has NOTHIN' on Kidd!

Famous(?) Food

 What. The. Hell?!

I was flipping channels when I got from work last night and I came across a new pop culture trainwreck on VH1, it's called Famous Food. Clearly, VH1 is struggling for new programming; when I tell you about this cast you will roll your eyes so far into the back of your head you may go blind. What is so great though, are the very serious profiles that VH1 has posted about this crew of misfits. Below is an exerpt of the "official" profile and then, in italics, the real deal.

Ashley Dupré is a Weekly Advice Columnist for The New York Post. You can catch her "Ask Ashley" advice column every Sunday in the Pulse's Meat Market section. Ashley has been a guest on "The View", "The Joy Behar Show", "Issues with Jane Valez-Mitchell" and "Geraldo at Large", as a NY Post Advice Columnist, giving advice on current news hot topics. Ashley was also on "Dr. Phil" giving personal advice to help a woman from making a decision that would change the rest of her life, for the worst. Lets call this what this is, this is the call girl from the center of the Elliot Spitzer scandal...classy.

Danielle Staub is definitely more than meets the eye regarding Danielle and that is reflected by her many entrepreneurial endeavors. Danielle's dedication to her inner spirit and body has inspired her to launch a fitness and nutrition video. She added "author" to her list of credits last year with the release of her memoir "The Naked Truth," which once and for all separate fact from fiction about her controversial past...Danielle is also involved with her parish, attends mass on Sundays with her daughters and supports various charities including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. No mention of the book and all the drama featured on Real Housewives of New Jersey; her ex-con protection team, etc. etc. etc. I wonder, if Big Pussy gets mad at her, if she will call that weasel buddy of hers.

Heidi Montag is an American media personality, singer and celebutante. She came to prominence with her starring role on the MTV reality series The Hills from 2006 to 2010. Plastic surgery freak, Spencer Pratt's wind-up Barbie. During episode one Danielle and Heidi are fast friends...can you imagine a more fitting pair??

Three 6 Mafia have a host of gold and platinum singles and albums, have produced for such platinum rappers as Ludacris and UGK, and have released albums under their own independent Hypnotize Minds imprint that have combined to sell several million units. They are the only rap group to win an Oscar and perform at the prestigious award ceremony; they won the Oscar for Best Original Song in 2006 for "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from the film Hustle & Flow at the 78th Annual Academy Awards. Who? Didn't they have some other miserable reality show call Adventures in Hollyhood. Whatever.

Vincent Pastore is a veteran character actor with a long list of film and television roles. Recently, he has entertained audiences on NBC's "Celebrity Apprentice" and with a recurring role on "General Hospital". He was also featured on the first episode of the new TV Land series, "Make My Day". Vincent is well known for his portrayal of Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on HBO's hit series "The Sopranos. WIN! I would totally go to a restaurant that he opened. Mangia!

Jake Pavelka is the handsome aviator who arguably still holds the title as "America's Most Eligible Bachelor" was introduced to home audiences on Season 5 of "The Bachelorette." Sent home and heartbroken, the clear fan-favorite was asked to come back, this time as "The Bachelor" in the 15th installment of the series, which went on to be the highest-rated season of the series, raking in had ever seen while setting staggering new records for the powerhouse network. Appreciative of the opportunities that emerged from "The Bachelor," he went on to dance with partner Chelsie Hightower on CBS's guiltiest pleasure, "Dancing with the Stars." Ha, yes, the profile said CBS's Dancing with the Stars...woops, make that ABC. Let's not forget that Jake is the reason that we were all inundated with the triumphant return of Jeffrey Osbournes "On the Wings of Love." Oh Jake, go away already . LOL.

Lonnie Moore & Mike Malin are longtime best friends and entrepreneurs and founder of the Dolcé Group. They serve as hosts of Famouse Food and will ultimately select a winner to be a managing partner of the new restaurant named Lemon Basket. In case you forgot...Lonnie, tried looking for love on Millionaire Matchmaker (interesting side-story here) and Mike "Boogie" was on seasons 2 and 6 of Big Brother. The show is called Famous Food??? How about Not-so-Famous Reality Leftovers.

Yahooooooooo!

Foodbuzz, the nice folks who sent me to NYC last year, has joined the celebration in support of Share our Strength! To show its appreciation, Yahoo! has committed to donate $20,000 to Share Our Strength on behalf of the Foodbuzz community of publishers and readers. How cool is that?!?

Wicked Wednesday

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-h2OMaE_okO8/ThpbAs-26kI/AAAAAAAAEWs/SxZXNYQTv6M/s1600/jack+tattoo.jpg

Here is my buddy, Jack (a.k.a. Jackie Pants) showing off his tough-guy scowl, and his wicked tattoo to match. His mom, my bestie Heather, writes an awesome mommy blog called Pass the Cereal, if you are a breeder, you will love it. :-)

Happy 4th of July!

First and foremost - a special shout-out to all of the men and women, past and present, who fight for our country; protect our borders; and ensure that freedom is ours. Thank You.

Now, check out the sweet view from my new apartment. Last night's Milwaukee city fireworks show was over an hour long and really beautiful. Tonight, all of the surrounding suburbs will light off their fireworks, and I have a feeling I will be able to see MANY from my awesome new balcony as well.

I am going to keep today's post short and sweet, since we all have better things to do on a holiday morning. But...I wanted to share this SUPER EASY, really delicious recipe with all of you. It's called French Watermelon, but all you really need to know is that it is crazy easy and really yummy and JUST for adults! Who doesn't love some refreshing boozy melon on a hot day!?

FRENCH WATERMELON (sized down)
  • 2-3 cups fresh watermelon chunks (available in the produce section or salad bar of most grocery stores)
  • 1/4 cup Vodka (for a delicious twist, use Bacardi Mojito instead)
  • 1/8 cup white sugar (I used simple syrup)
  • 5 fresh mint leaves, chopped (Pick 'em from your garden, I did!)
Directions: Toss the watermelon, vodka, sugar, and mint together in a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours. I said it was easy, now go makes some for this afternoon's BBQ!

I got the original recipe off of the allrecipes.com website. Because I can't leave well enough alone, AS ALWAYS, I made some tweaks which are represented in the parenthesis. Also, keep in mind that the original recipe which can be found at the links is for a WHOLE watermelon, perfect for big group parties. I don't think I have told you all that I am now an allrecipes.com Brand Ambassador - a pretty sweet gig. I don't get paid, but I do get to have an excuse to try new recipes every month and get my foodie photographer skills put to the test. You will see a lot from my adventures of being an Allrecipes Allstar in the coming months, mmmm...enjoy!

Come in and stay awhile...

There are really no words to describe this photo, other than...ENJOY! Many thanks to the fabulous Dear Ruthie who posted this to Facebook this morning.
